Defense Force - Rise Thursday, 26th April This commercial was originally planned to involve some fairly sophisticated 3D Badge replacements, but once the shots came in it became apparent that such sophistication was probably not warranted, and hence the commercial was completed mostly in Shake (my work) and Flame. The final cut involved multiple footage sources, ranging from 8mm film (stock footage), to DV to 16mm shot specifically for the ad. Flame was used to match grain, damage and colour. The brief was simple, have a 3D badge on black fly backward into a shot that would fade in and anchor itself seamlessly onto the collar of a WW1 soldier. The badge was made with simple 3D geometry bend/pushed into shape fairly quickly, then a lot of time went into making a quality bump map to make the text stand out and the various other details on the badge itself. The final badge utilised 2 lights (both Omni's with no shadow component) and an ambient occlusion pass.
The shot was provided in HD (1920x1080) so I could zoom in further. The shot was stabilised at the start so we could fly the logo backward, and from that point on it was simple a tracked corner pin (two tracks per corner then averaged together). A white patch had been placed on the soldier for tracking reference and was painted out. Luckily, since the final master would be a 720x576 PAL image, I had plenty of room to pan/scan/zoom the image about to help it fit the shot better. The grade of the shot changed 3 times during the production of the shot.
Why use a CG badge at all? It wasn't decided which badge would be used until Post.
